Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe is happy that he could make his mark in last night’s Europa League clash with Tromso.

The Englishman has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane due to the arrival of Roberto Soldado, but he started in last night’s game and managed to get on the scoresheet twice, with two lovely finishes.

Earlier in the week, Defoe admitted that he needed more game-time to make sure that he can be in the England squad for next year’s World Cup and after the game, he admitted that he was happy to be on the scoresheet.

“It’s great, he’s a legend, to be up there with someone like that is great,” said Defoe, who is hoping to force his way into Andre Villas-Boas’ strong-looking squad.

“When you get an opportunity you’ve got to take it – it’s as simple as that,” he added. “The performance was good tonight – we’ve won the game quite comfortably.

“It’s a case of working hard for the team, to win the game. There’s a good spirit there and the new lads have been brilliant.”
