Joe Gomez has pointed out the reasons why Liverpool have had a solid defensive display this season.
Since the arrival of Virgil van Dijk, there has been a transformation in the Liverpool backline as the defence looks more compact this term. Gomez has been one of the standout performers for the Reds as he alongside the Dutch defender have stopped the unnecessary leaking of goals.
Jurgen Klopp’s pressing style left them open at the back on a number of occasions as they conceded 38 goals last season compared to Manchester City’s 27 and Manchester United’s 28.
But the German gaffer particularly emphasised on strengthening his defence in the summer as he brought in Alisson Becker from AS Roma and the impact has been pretty purposeful.
Gomez said, “We have worked a lot in training on being defensively sound as a unit and it’s paying off.
“That’s what we want – keeping clean sheets. It helps that in terms of the defence we’ve all been here since last season. We have played quite a lot of games together now. There hasn’t been a new addition to the back four this season.
“It’s about communication and knowing each other’s game. There’s a good understanding back there but it’s just a good start.
“This is the foundation for the season ahead. There’s a long way to go. We have to carry it on and keep that habit.”
