Chelsea players were banned from watching the Premier League encounter between Liverpool and Manchester City before their Capital One Cup final.

Jose Mourinho didn’t allow any of his players to watch the match at Anfield, banning it from the team bus and also the hotel they were staying in.

Eventually Liverpool saw off Chelsea’s title-rivals to leave Mourinho’s men five points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand. Later on, Chelsea were celebrating themselves as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Wembley to win the first piece of silverware this season.

After the game, Mourinho revealed that none of his team watched the Liverpool-City game before the final.

“I knew that was an impossible mission, but I didn’t want the television on in the hotel or on the bus.

“I told them (the players) I didn’t want any kind of manifestation or disappointment if City scored in the last minute, or Liverpool won. I wanted complete silence.

“We were successful on that. But one member of my staff jumped up in the bus. Silvino (Louro, assistant first-team coach). I wanted to kill the guy. He broke the rule.”
