Jose Mourinho has provided a positive update on David De Gea’s future insisting the Manchester United custodian wants to stay at the club.
The Spanish number one once again displayed exemplary goal keeping skills in United’s 1-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League. A Marouane Fellaini header in the added minutes helped the Red Devils in sealing a place in the knock out stages.
De Gea’s current contract runs until the end of this year. Although United do have the option to trigger a one year extension clause the club has been in contact with his representative over the possibility of signing a brand new deal.
Following an underwhelming World Cup and a relatively slow start to the season questions were raised over his form. But his excellent show against Young Boys proved he still is one of the best in the business.
Mourinho said, “I know he wants to stay.
“I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and they are working on that. So hopefully, sooner or later, they arrive at a good conclusion.”
“Without David’s save, there would be no winning goal.
“He’s the best goalkeeper in the world and if our ambitions are to be a big club, a winning club you need the best goalkeeper in the world.
“You also need some other best players [in their position] in the world, in this case we only have the best goalkeeper in the world.”
