Juventus Midfielder Nicolo Fagioli faces investigation for involvement in illegal betting
Nicolo Fagioli, a 22-year-old Juventus midfielder, is now being investigated for possible illegal betting activities, according to Turin Chief Prosecutor Enrica Gabetta. The investigation, which was originally indicated by the daily La Stampa, is part of a larger criminal investigation targeting users of illegal internet betting services. The nature of the believed betting activity in which Fagioli is involved is unknown.
According to the Italian soccer federation’s (FIGC) code of conduct, betting on soccer matches is severely prohibited, and if proven guilty, a player faces disqualification for a minimum of three years and a fine of at least 25,000 euros. In addition to the ongoing inquiry, the FIGC prosecutor’s office is looking into Fagioli’s case.
Fagioli, who earned his Italian national team debut in November of last year, has been involved in six of Juventus’ eight Serie A matches this season. The club declined to comment, and attempts to reach Fagioli for a response were unsuccessful at the time of publishing. The inquiry is still underway, and further information is awaited as officials go into the charges against the talented young midfielder.
