Leyton Orient have appointed Kevin Nolan as their new player-manager, with the experienced midfielder signing a two-and-a-half-year deal at Brisbane Road.

Nolan, aged 33, has been training with the League Two side, having been without a club since departing Orient’s East London neighbours, West Ham United, at the end of August – he replaces Ian Hendon, who was sacked as manager on Wednesday.

Hendon left following the recent 3-1 defeat to Exeter City – the O’s are currently 11th in the fourth-tier, three-points off the play-off places, and have won just once in eight games – a run of form which forced the Italian owners of the outfit to make a decision.

The incoming Nolan will combine playing for his new employers with managing day to day activities at Leyton Orient, following the completion of his coaching badges, which he is currently undertaking.

Nolan brings a wealth of playing experience to the role, having made over 500 appearances for Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United and West Ham United, but faces an altogether different challenge when he makes the move into the dugout.

A statement on Orient’s official website read:“Kevin brings with him invaluable expertise and know-how, with 17 years’ experience in high-level football.

“A number of strong candidates were interviewed by the chairman, but Kevin’s hunger, desire and passion to succeed at Leyton Orient, coupled with his experience, were key in the decision process and the club believe they have the man to take Leyton Orient forward and improve the club’s position.

His first game in charge will take place at Adams Park on Saturday afternoon, when Wycombe Wanderers await.
