Lionel Messi is expected to make his first appearance against Real Betis since fracturing his arm, Ernesto Valverde has confirmed. The gaffer also added Ousmane Dembele has been dropped from the squad.
Messi was included in the squad to face Inter Milan in the Champions League but Valverde decided not to rush things as the Catalan giants played out a 1-1 draw at the San Siro.
Messi awkwardly landed on his arm and looked in severe pain. He had to be treated on the pitch before being substituted by Ousmane Dembele. But his absence proved to be a blessing in disguise for Barcelona as they cruised to a 5-1 win without their star player in the El Classico.
Messi’s return will be a big boost for Barcelona who will be looking to extend their lead at the top. “Everyone who is selected is in good shape,
“It is true that we are looking after Marc, but he’s available for the game against Betis.
“We will see tomorrow if Messi is ready to play for 90 minutes or not, but he’s lost the fear from his fall already.”
Dembele didn’t appear at the training on Thursday but Valverde insisted dropping the French youngster isn’t a punishment for them. “It is not a punishment.
“Everyone can interpret it as they wish.
“The talent that Dembele has is difficult to find and we have to help him take advantage of it,
“We want the best from every player in our team. Dembele has incredible talent and we want to help him show it some day.”
