Contract talks have reportedly stalled, but Rodgers is confident of a resolution

Brendan Rodgers has shed light on contract talks with Raheem Sterling, asserting that the club will not be held to ransom by Sterling who Rodgers says has been offered a ‘wonderful deal’ whilst remaining confident that a deal will be struck soon.

Having secured Phillipe Coutinho’s future, Sterling is next on Liverpool’s list and talks between the club and the player have been ongoing for some time.

Club captain Steven Gerrard has this week come out saying that Sterling and vice-captain Henderson must be tied down to long term contracts – a sentiment echoed by his manager.

Rodgers has said, “Steven is relaying what the club is wanting. Both players are very important for the future. I’m sure it will be resolved fairly soon.”

“Raheem is going to get rewarded. He has been offered a wonderful deal, an incredible deal for a young player.”

However, Rodgers insists that the new contract is not just a reward, but a step in Sterling’s so far impressive development.

“It is very important for young players to have something to strive for and if they get too much too soon it will sabotage their development. Raheem has been outstanding since he was put in the team but you have to remember this was a 17-year-old who was put in the team.”
