Battle heats up for man dubbed ‘next Andrea Pirlo’
Liverpool have nosed ahead of Arsenal in the chase to sign Barcelona defensive midfielder Sergi Samper.
Samper, full name Sergi Samper Montana, was linked for a long time with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
He had a £9.6m clause in his contract, which the Gunners were reportedly ready to meet in January.
However, a move never happened, and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was keeping tabs on the situation.
Now, it seems, the man dubbed the ‘next Andrea Pirlo’ could soon be plying his trade at Anfield instead.
Samper has yet to make a La Liga appearance for the Catalan side, all his appearaces for the first-team have been in the Champions League.
He has worked his way up through the youth system at the Nou Camp, and also played for Barcelona B.
