Liverpool are prepared to make a Summer bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Marcel Schmelzer, as Brendan Rodgers prepares to build a squad big enough to cope with next season’s Champions League football.
The Reds have all-but guaranteed their spot in the top-four of the Premier League, and they have a massive chance of winning their first Premier League title, but despite the exciting race for the trophy, Rodgers is already working on potential signings for the Summer.
Rodgers is desperate to strengthen his defence in the pre-season after several errors from his back-four could have cost them silverware this season, and the left-back area is a real concern for the manager.
Liverpool currently have Aly Cissokho on loan at left-back from Valencia, but Rodgers isn’t interested in making that loan a permanent move and his attentions are now on Dortmund full-back, Schmelzer.
The 26-year-old could cost The Reds as little as £10million, but may face competition from Real Madrid, who have previously shown interest in the German international.
