The Spaniard is currently on loan at Valencia, where he has made 18 appearances in all competitions this term.

The signing of Nemanja Matic from Benfica and use of David Luiz in a holding midfield role at Chelsea this season means that Romeu would face serious competition for a first-team place under Jose Mourinho if he returns to west London.

The 22-year-old is content at Valencia and admits that “anything can happen” – although concedes Chelsea will decide his future.

He told Superdeporte: “The last thing we know is that Valencia are happy with me and that they would like to continue.

“I’m comfortable here but we fare for the end of the season. I have a year of contract left and anything can happen. Chelsea are in charge.”

Romeu moved to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona in the summer of 2011 and impressed in his first campaign, managing 16 Premier League outings, but struggled last term after picking up a serious knee injury.
