Liverpool are ready to make a formal bid of £8million for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren, as Brendan Rodgers eyes defensive improvements ahead of next season.

The Reds fell just short of their first ever Premier League title after costly results against Chelsea and Crystal Palace, and Rodgers is keen to move quickly in the transfer market to strengthen his squad, and it’s believed defenders are his number-one priority.

The club have already been linked with Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna and Chelsea’s Ashley Cole, both whom are available for free after their contracts expired at both their clubs, but it now appears that a centre-back is their main focus, and Lovren from Southampton is their number-one choice.

With Daniel Agger expected to leave the club, and high-profile errors made throughout the season by Kolo Toure, Rodgers is keen to sign at least one new centre-back, and after an impressive season for The Saints, Lovren could be the man Rodgers needs.

It’s believed Liverpool are willing to pay up to £8m for the Croatian centre-back and will monitor his performances during this Summer’s World Cup in Brazi.
