Liverpool vs Manchester United: Top 5 Premier League Matches? There are plenty to choose from, but which are the Top 5 Premier League Matches between Liverpool and Manchester United? Maybe it was Eric Cantona’s comeback in 1995, or Fernando Torres giving Nemanja Vidic nightmares in 2009?

Read on for our list of Liverpool vs Manchester United: Top 5 Premier League Matches

5. Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United (2002/03)

This is a match remembered mainly for one thing – a Jerzy Dudek howler that presented Diego Forlan with the opening goal. Despite going onto great things in his career, Forlan hadn’t enjoyed a particularly successful spell with United but was handed a goal on a plate after the Polish goalkeeper dropped a loose ball straight at his feet. The Uruguayan marksman scored an excellent second goal moments later, before Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia reduced the arrears with eight minutes on the clock. Forlan’s goals went down in United folklore, and the Red Devils went on to win the title that season.

4. Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool (1995/96)

Number four in a countdown is a match remembered as Eric Cantona’s comeback. The legendary French striker had been banned for eight months after the infamous Kung Fu kick on a Crystal Palace fan in January 1995. He returned against Liverpool, and was back with a bang as he assisted the opening goal for Nicky Butt after two minutes. However, Liverpool struck back and came from behind to lead 2-1 with two goals from the predatory Robbie Fowler. With fifteen minutes on the clock though, who else but Cantona stepped up to convert a penalty and earn a 2-2 draw for United.

3. Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool (1992/93)

This was the first ever meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League. Another 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, this time it was United making the comeback and preventing what would have been a famous Liverpool win in the dying moments. The Reds went into the break 2-0 uo thanks to goals from Don Hutchinson and all-time top scorer Ian Rush, and looked to have done enough for the three points. However, Mark Hughes pulled one back for the home side in the 78th minute and then equalised with a trademark header in injury time to save a point.

2. Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool (2008/09)

This is probably the most memorable meeting between the two sides this side of the millennium, at least for Liverpool fans. Both teams were challenging for the title and there was a lot of hostility between managers Rafael Benitez and Sir Alex Ferguson. Cristiano Ronaldo put United in front from the penalty spot early on, but Fernando Torres inspired a famous comeback for the reds, equalising in cold-blooded fashion after leaving Nemanja Vidic for dead. Steven Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena added further goals to complete a 4-1 win, although United it was who went on to win the league.

1. Liverpool 3-3 Manchester United (1993/94)

Continuing with the comeback theme, number one in our list is a match that again lives long in the memory for Liverpool fans. It didn’t look that way early on though – United raced into a 3-0 lead in just 23 minutes through goals from Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Dennis Irwin. The Red Devils were in dreamland at Anfield, but the home side rallied and pulled off a famous fightback. Nigel Clough scored twice before half-time to cut the deficit to just one, before cult hero Razor Ruddock equalised with little over ten minutes remaining. They couldn’t get the win, but the match remains an all-time Premier League classic.
