Ed Woodward will give Louis van Gaal £150m+ to spend on players

Manchester United are set to splash out £150 million on players, as they target another summer spending spree.

Chief Executive Ed Woodward has confirmed that he will give manager Louis van Gaal cash to spend in the next transfer window, and the Dutchman has four main targets in mind.

This comes after van Gaal signed PSV winger Memphis Depay for £25 million last week, from under Paris Saint Germain’s noses.

Top of United’s hit list is an £80 million move for under fire Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale.

Southampton and England right back Nathaniel Clyne is also a £20 million target, although the Saints are confident of tying Clyne down to signing a new contract.

The Red Devils then want to spend £50 million on the Borussia Dortmund pair of Mats Hummels, and Ilkay Gundogan.

Central defender Hummels will reportedly cost the Old Trafford club £30m, and midfielder Gundogan £20m, with both wanting a move away after Dortmund’s poor Bundesliga campaign.

Transfers Promised

Ed Woodward is confident that he can deliver this summer, to help the side compete for trophies next season.

“The squad will be absolutely deep enough and ready to challenge on all fronts, all competitions next year,” Woodward said.

“That, as ever, does involve some ins and outs in the summer, which we’re not going to guide on in terms of number.

“Regarding this summer’s transfer activity, we have already started implementing our plans, and last week announced that Memphis Depay, who is one of the most exciting young players in Europe, will be joining our first-team.

“We expect to be active again during the window, but it is too early to give guidance on transfers or wages at this point.”
