Manchester City’s impressive form at the Etihad Stadium continued this evening after they saw off Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool 2-1 thanks to goals from Vincent Kompany and Alvaro Negredo.
The game got off to a great start for the visitors as Philippe Coutinho gave them a shock lead which silenced the home fans, but by half-time, they were 2-1 down and that is how it stayed for the rest of the game.
Here is some reaction from the managers and the players.
Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany: “The three points are massive. It is the hardest game we have had at home so far this season. It’s a great boost.
“I loved every single minute of it (my battle with Luis Suarez). I live for these games and we had a handshake after the match. He appreciates the battle and so do I.”
On title race: “It’s a weird one. All the top teams started off a little slowly. I don’t know how many wins we have got now but we can’t seem to get hold of that top spot.”
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini speaking to BT Sport: “The most important thing was we were losing 1-0 and we had the character and trust to go for the win. In that moment when Liverpool scored their goal , we had at least three clear chances to score but they scored first and it’s difficult for a team to try to continue playing without being exposed to the counter attack that Liverpool do very well.
“I think it was very important to try to finish the year near the top of the table.”
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers speaking to BT Sport: “Overall I’m proud of the team, how we played the charisma in our football and our passing. We scored a wonderful goal and we felt we could have had two or three more, To lose we’re bitterly disappointed but it was an outstanding performance.
“The three officials were poor in their performance level and we didn’t’ have anything go our way but the players kept on fighting and the game was in the balance until the end.”
