Manchester United are eyeing a January transfer move for Japanese international, Yoshinori Muto, according to reports on Boxing Day.

The 23-year-old, who plays his club football in the German Bundesliga with Mainz, has netted seven times in 17 appearances since making the move to Europe from FC Tokyo, back in his homeland.

Muto, who can play in a midfield as well as a main striker, has apparently been scouted by United already this term, and has apparently been recommended by former manager, turned director, Sir Alex Ferguson.

Louis Van Gaal’s side have struggled in front of goal this season, scoring just 17 times – and following the Boxing Day defeat at Stoke City, the Dutchman is hoping for a change in fortune, as he clings onto his job.

Van Gaal is set to be sacked after 18 months at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils now winless in seven games.
