Manchester United legend: “I’d rather play under Guardiola than Mourinho”
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand gave a surprise answer when asked whether he would rather play under current Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola.
The retired defender was made to choose who he preferred on the Claire Balding show on BT Sport, and opted for the manager of rivals Manchester City rather than the Portuguese tactician.
Ferdinand came up against Mourinho many times during his 12 year spell at Old Trafford. Initially he seemed split between the two, but eventually opted for Guardiola.
“As a defender, I’d rather play under Jose [Mourinho] because I’d get well protected,” he said. “But if I was going there to commentate on my attacking players in front of me like I used to, Pep [Guardiola].”
When pushed for an answer, Ferdinand snubbed the current United boss. “For enjoyment I’m going to go for Pep.”
His choice is perhaps understandable given the type of defender he was. Calm, composed and confident with the ball at his feet, the ex England international would have thrived in Guardiola’s system.
Mourinho is widely regarded as the best defensive manager in the game right now. Ferdinand’s answer shows how the game is developing and the new, attacking role that centre-backs play now.
