Manchester United maintain interest in Asmir Begovic

David Moyes sent his goalkeeping coach Chris Woods to the Britannia Stadium to watch Begovic in Stoke’s 1-0 win against Arsenal last weekend. The Bosnian international put i in a solid performance, keeping a clean sheet against the Gunners.

Begovic had previously been linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the whole of last season while Manchester United were still under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson. However, after Moyes was appointed and David de Gea’s increasingly competent performances, interest seemed to die down.

Manchester United coaches are not particularly dissatisfied with De Gea but are looking to increase competition across the board, according to the English daily.

But renewed interest in the goalkeeper coincides suspiciously well with reports that the Spanish ‘keeper has agreed to join Real Madrid at the end of the season.

According to Mundo Deportivo, both Real Madrid and Manchester United have agreed a deal in principle for the transfer of De Gea to the Bernabeu. Real Madrid are looking for a long-term successor to Iker Casillas and it seems the 23-year-old is their No.1 target.

De Gea was named in the PFA Team of the Year last season, leaving Manchester United’s interest in Begovic baffling to say the least. Begovic has already indicated in the past that he will only leave Stoke for guaranteed first team football but it seems unless De Gea leaves, he won’t get it at Old Trafford.
