Manchester United won’t get top-four, says Neville

Former-Manchester United captain Gary Neville doesn’t believe David Moyes will achieve a top-four finish in his first season at the club.

The ex-Everton boss has struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired at the end of last season, and with only 11 games left, a top-four finish looks really unlikely for Moyes and co.

United are currently eight points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, who play Swansea City later, with a win extending that lead to 11-points, which would mean United would have to gain a point a game over their rivals in order to feature in next season’s Champions League.

A 2-0 win at Crystal Palace last night gave United a boost in confidence, but Neville still believes they will miss out on the top-four.

“I actually think Manchester United won’t finish fourth this season,” Neville revealed. “It will be a massive struggle for them to get into the top four. They’re eight points off Tottenham and 11 points off Liverpool with no signs they’re even hitting a run of form.

“They’re making mistakes in most matches at the moment and unless they go on a ridiculous run and win every match and the teams above them implode, I don’t think they will get in the Champions League.

“If you said to the fans six months ago, Man United won’t get into the Champions League they would have been shell-shocked, but I think there is a realisation it would be a fantastic turnaround of incredible proportions if they were to get into the Champions League. They’ve resigned themselves to the fact they’re not going to be in it.”

He added: “In terms of what they do for next season, they just need to start performing and get results and don’t think about Champions League football –  think about winning the title. That’s what Manchester United need to do.

“We’ve become obsessed about Champions League football and obviously you have to qualify for it, but winning the title is all that matters.”
