Everton boss Marco Silva believes strong competition in each department is the key reason behind their recent success and it will lay the foundation for their future course of action.
Everton maintained their strong run as they outsmart Cardiff City in the Premier League to lift themselves to the sixth spot. A Gylfi Sigurdsson strike in the 59th minute was enough as the Toffees registered their fourth straight home win at the Goodison Park.
The former Watford manager has a very talented squad at his disposal and the squad depth seems to have given him a new selection headache. Kurt Zouma had been the preferred choice in the backline alongside Michael Keane but Mina’s exemplary performance against Chelsea forced Silva to alter his decision and the Columbian international secured a place in the starting lineup for the second successive match.
Silva said, “It was a really difficult decision to take [at centre-back].
“It is the type of decision a coach has to take.
“Zouma worked really hard during the week to show me he wanted to play and he deserved to play. Kurt and Michael had done really well, with Zouma on the left and Michael on the right.
“We have very good solutions in that position and I don’t forget the other two Mason Holgate and Phil Jagielka.
“But it is football and there is good competition between the players.
“In the last game our organisation was fantastic. Mina did really well and kept his position.
“Let’s see what my decision is in the future, it can change for many reasons.
I like to have this problem. It means we have quality and this competition will make them better players every day. We can grow as a club in this way.”
