The holding midfielder was very critical of his teammates

Nemanja Matic has threatened to quit international football after questioning the ‘poor attitude’ of his fellow players.

The 27-year old has made 26 appearances for his native Serbia, but his latest cap in Friday’s 4-1 friendly defeat to the Czech Republic may have been his final one.

Matic vented his frustrations after the loss, questioning the attitude of the whole set-up. Serbia failed to qualify for Euro 16, finishing fourth in Group I behind Portugal, Albania and Denmark.

‘there is no point in me carrying on’

Speaking after their seventh setback in 11 games, Matic said: “I always try to lead by example but some people don’t want to see that. The attitude of some players is unacceptable, not just on the pitch but off it too. It was obvious from the moment we got together on Monday.

I told our coach [Radovan Curcic] there is no point in me carrying on with the national team if things don’t change.”

“I’d really like to know whether some of my teammates apply the same poor working ethic at their clubs as they do in the national team most of the time,” the Chelsea midfielder added.

The former Benfica man has previously been involved in a spat with his national team, when he refused to play under the then-Head Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic back in 2012.

This came after Mihajlovic called up Matic to the squad, but didn’t play him in five consecutive matches.
