Mourinho wants United deal in writing

The former Chelsea boss is seeking a more formal agreement

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants written assurances that he will take over from Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United this summer.

United managerial legend Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly backed the Dutchman to stay at Old Trafford, but Mourinho wants a written promise that he will be handed the reins.

There is currently a split decision in the Manchester United board about whether Mourinho should take over at United, while executive vice-chaimarn Ed Woodward and the Glazer family are keen for the 53-year-old to be appointed.

Mourinho has been out of work since his sacking by Chelsea back in December, as the Blues sat close to the relegation places – just six months after winning the title.

United gathering momentum

However, another stumbling block for Mourinho is that Van Gaal has managed to steer United’s results in the right direction, recently.

One-goal victories away to arch rivals Manchester City and at home to Everton have given them maximum points in the league – since being knocked out of the Europa League by bitters rivals Liverpool – although the Dutchman has admitted his side were lucky to beat Everton at the weekend.

And while Van Gaal looks to keep his job safe, for now, the Red Devils will also be mulling over Mourinho’s managerial record – having struggled with his clubs in their third season.

Mourinho managed three full campaigns at Stamford Bridge in his first stint at Chelsea’s helm, before being sacked early on in the following campaign. But was again relieved of his duties in the third season of his second stint at the Bridge this time around.

Manchester United are currently on 53 points – one point behind Manchester City – and are in contention for a return to the Champions League, in fifth.
