Steven Gerrard was bewildered when Suarez let the Liverpool captain take the free kick that propelled them to a 2-1 victory against Sunderland.

The skipper was seen joking to Suarez during the match about not letting the Uruguayan take any more free kicks however after the match he was much more serious. “Suarez has been magnificent on set-pieces but sometimes you need people to step in and I got it right,” said the Liverpool skipper. He went on to give Sunderland respect for a credible performance but insisted that it does not matter who scored the goals for the club as they have not clinched any silverware this season.

Suarez has dominated the back pages since the start of the season however, Sturridge has not gone unnoticed – he has scored in seven consecutive league games – 12 in 13 since his return from an ankle injury.

After the match Brendan Rodgers praised Daniel Sturridge for securing his 20th league goal of the season, describing him as a “revelation”. Both Suarez and Sturridge have surpassed the 20-goal mark for the season and Rodgers described it as “A great feeling but it’s more important for the team. It’s not about personal accolades.” Liverpool are just a point behind leaders Chelsea thanks to their attractive attacking football they have been play this season. They also showed their character as they halted a potential Sunderland comeback as Ki-Sung-yeung gave Sunderland a lifeline late into the game.

Liverpool host both Chelsea and Manchester City in the run-in for the title and Rodgers is confident his group of players will be able to handle the pressure: ‘It is just about reinforcing the calmness, for us to dominate the ball. Our idea is to stay calm under pressure and it’s important for (our fans) to stay calm too.
