Inter Milan have sacked Luciano Spalletti despite the team sealing a Champions League spot. The Nerazzurri ended 4th in the Serie this season A and also reached the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia where they lost to eventual champions Lazio on penalties. However, the club were out in the group stages of the Champions League and lost in the last 16 of the Europa League to eventual semi-finalists Eintracht Frankfurt. That may not be the kind of results the club expected this season.

Spalletti joined Inter Milan in 2017 following the sacking of Stefano Pioli. In his very first season at the club, Spalletti guided Inter Milan to 4th place and a place in the Champions League for the first time in 7 years. That season, Inter also reached the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia.

A statement from Inter on their official website read,  “FC Internazionale Milano can confirm that Luciano Spalletti is no longer Head Coach of the First Team. The Club wishes to thank Spalletti for his work and the results achieved together.”

Spalletti’s sacking comes just two days following the death of his brother Marcelo.
