Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of 22-year old midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyon on a 6-year deal. Ndombele’s transfer fee is reportedly ÂŁ55 million which is a club record, surpassing the ÂŁ36 million that the club spent to sign defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax.

Ndombele had a fine 18/19 season with Lyon, scoring 3 goals and providing 8 assists n 49 appearances across all competitions. His performances found Ndombele a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season.

Despite Lyon reaching only the last 16 of the Champions League, Ndombele found a place in the Team of the Season, scoring 2 goals during the tournament. Ndombele, who joined Lyon on loan from Amiens in 2017 before joining the club permanently in 2018, leaves the club with 96 appearances to his name, scoring 4 goals and providing 16 assists. Lyon have earned quite a lot of funds with the transfers of Ndombele and Ferland Mendy who joined Real Madrid a few weeks back.

Ndombele’s performances for Lyon earned him a call-up to France’s national team. He made his international debut in a friendly against Iceland. So far, Ndombele has made 6 appearances for the national team, the most recent of them coming in France’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Andorra a couple of weeks back.

There were several clubs interested in signing Ndombele besides Spurs. These included Manchester United and Manchester City among others. However, it’s Spurs who have landed Ndombele this summer and will have him at the club till 2025.

Ndombele is Spurs’ third summer signing with the club having signed forwards Jack Clarke and Kion Etete from Leeds United and Notts County respectively previously. With Christian Eriksen’s future with Spurs doubtful, the addition of Ndombele is a huge bonus to a midfield that already has the likes of Dele Alli, Erid Dier, Victor Wanyama, Erik Lamela and Harry Winks.
