Players are to blame, says Rooney

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has leapt to the defence of manager David Moyes by claiming this year’s failure has been due to the players and not the boss.

Moyes, who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in the Summer, has come under a lot of criticism during his short time at Old Trafford and faces missing out on Champions League football for the first-team in well-over a decade.

United are currently seventh in the Premier League and are falling way behind fourth-placed Liverpool, so realistically, the only way to get into next season’s competition is by winning it this season, which Moyes feels his team can do.

Despite all the negativity aimed at Moyes, Rooney has leapt to his defence and has told the fans to blame the players instead as they are the ones on the pitch playing the matches.

“As a group of players we have to take responsibility for our league position,” Rooney conceded

“We know we’re better than that and we haven’t performed as well as we can do.

“We know that and it hurts. Now it’s important we finish the season strongly and take some momentum into next year, but more importantly get into fourth spot and do well in the Champions League.”
