Former-president reveals German was on list

Real Madrid wanted Jurgen Klopp as their new manager, according to former-president Roman Calderon.

The La Liga giants were in the market for a new manager following Carlo Ancelotti‘s dismissal, and according to Calderon, Rafa Benitez was third-choice.

Madrid did end up with the Spaniard, who had just left Serie A side Napoli, but according to the former-president, Los Blancos wanted Joachim Low and Klopp beforehand.

Calderon Reveals All

“(Florentino) Perez went to sign (Joachim) Low, the German that is coaching the national team, then Klopp and finally Benitez,” said Calderon.

“The truth is that Benitez was the fourth option for Real Madrid.”

Klopp was adamant he wanted at least a year away from the game after leaving Borussia Dortmund, but when Liverpool sacked Brendan Rodgers, he saw it as the perfect opportunity to manage in the Premier League.
