The New York Red Bulls announced today that they have signed defender Roy Miller and goalkeeper Luis Robles to new contracts. Miller was previously out of contract with the club. Per club and league regulations, specific terms of the deals were not disclosed.
“With one of our goals being to create long-term continuity within our roster, we are very pleased to have signed Roy and Luis to new contracts,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “Both players were important players for our team in 2013, and we are happy to keep them in New York.”
“Roy has shown that he is a very capable left fullback, exhibiting top-level defending and attacking qualities. He is also a hard-working professional and a very good character to have around the club. We are pleased to come to terms with him on a new contract,” Roxburgh said about Miller.
On Robles, Roxburgh said: “Luis demonstrated to us and the rest of the league that he was one of the top goalkeepers in Major League Soccer in 2013. His consistency for us last season was vital in helping our club win the MLS Supporters’ Shield, and we are pleased to reward him with a new contract.”
Miller is the longest continuously-tenured Red Bull, having been with the club since January 2010, when he came to MLS from Norwegian side Rosenborg. This season, Miller tallied 17 appearances and one assist before sustaining an Achilles injury in late August that sidelined him for most of the remainder of the season.
Over his four-year career in MLS, the Costa Rican has amassed 96 appearances (87 starts) and 12 assists. Miller has earned 42 caps for Costa Rica, scoring one international goal, and helped the Ticos qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Prior to coming to the United States, Miller played for Costa Rica’s Cartagines (2001-05), Norway’s Bodo/Glimt (2005-08) and Rosenborg (2008-09) while going on loan to Swedish club Orgryte in 2009.
Robles was the only Red Bull to feature in every minute of the regular season for New York in 2013. In his first full season in MLS, the 29-year-old recorded 11 shutouts to tie a club record and posted a 1.21 goals-against-average in helping New York win its first Supporters’ Shield.
Robles was tied for first in the league in goalkeeper wins (17), third in saves (103) and fourth in shutouts. The Fort Huachuca, Ariz., native was acquired on Aug. 8, 2012 via the MLS Allocation Process and proceeded to start four games last year.
A former University of Portland product, Robles spent 2007-2012 in Germany with Kaiserslautern and Karlsruher. He has earned one cap for the United States when he played in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
