Reina refuses to rule out move back to Liverpool

The goalkeeper is out on loan at Napoli for the season and had looked to be surplus to requirements in the summer.

But confusion surrounding the player’s future remains as his comments directly contradict those of Rodgers just a fortnight ago. The manager was firm in his stance that the 31-year-old’s time on Merseyside had definitely come to an end.

Simon Mignolet joined the club from Sunderland for £9million and has proven a consistent performer between the sticks. One major criticism of Reina is that he had grown increasingly erratic.

Even so, the Spaniard believes he could be making his way back to Anfield after the season has finished.

‘Liverpool got another goalkeeper and they told me they were happy to loan me for a season,’ Reina told the BBC.

‘It was strange but I don’t regret it. There are always ups and downs – the last two-and-a-half years at Liverpool, there were different methods and perhaps I didn’t do as good as I used to under Rafa but I don’t think I was bad.’

Reina penned an open letter to supporters after leaving for Serie A in July. That was published on the official website and appeared to have ended any prospect of a comeback.

Rodgers said last month: ‘He’s already written his (goodbye) letter hasn’t he? I was surprised at the letter when you are a loan player. Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli he was looking to move.’

That doesn’t seem to be deterring Reina though, who – alongside claiming Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is the best he’s worked with – added: ‘Is the door closed on Liverpool? No. That is what the manager says apparently but I have got two years left on my contract.

‘Liverpool is an offensive team – they would prefer to win games 3-2 but I believe they are happy with Mignolet and winning that way.’
