Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes returning first-team players will be vital for the club’s title charge.

The Gunners had to come from behind in yesterday’s London derby against West Ham United at Upton Park and it was mainly due to fit-again striker Lukas Podolski.

After he came off the bench, he managed to set up one for Theo Walcott, which gave Arsenal the lead, and then the German international wrapped up the three points with a neat finish late on.

Speaking to the club’s official website after the game, Mertesacker said it was vital for the injured players to return as soon as possible in order to help the side with their title push.

“We need the right additions,” Mertesacker told Arsenal Player. “We said that a lot in the summer then Mesut Ozil came.

“But at this time, in a very special period that only happens in England, you need to get the right additions with players who come back from injury.

“We lost Aaron Ramsey [against West Ham] so a good player is maybe out for two or three weeks so we need the right additions now. We have a good squad and that’s going to be vital in the next couple of weeks.”
