Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes his side beat the best team in the league yesterday as they saw off Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite going 1-0 down after a Philippe Coutinho goal, City bounced back before half-time and eventually went into the interval in the lead thanks to goals from Vincent Kompany and Alvaro Negredo.
It was a rare tough game for City at the Etihad Stadium and despite a whole host of chances for Liverpool, the hosts managed to hold on, and after the game, Pellegrini was full of praise for both his players and also his opponents.
Pellegrini said: ‘It was very important because Liverpool were the best team of the Premier League.
‘They were top of the table before the match so if they won, they would be four points ahead of our team.
‘I am very happy with the response because it is not easy when you face such a difficult team, especially on the counter-attack when you are losing 1-0.
‘It is very easy to leave space for them. I think we defended very well.’
