Rodgers: Liverpool better than I expected

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has said that his ‘exceptional’ Liverpool side have progressed much faster than he expected when he first took the helm at Anfield. After failing to secure a Top 5 finish in their past four Premier League seasons, club owner John W. Henry was ready to be patient with Rodgers’ work in improving the side.

Asked whether he thought the team were ahead of where he expected them to be at the beginning of his reign, he replied, “Yes, I feel they are. When I first spoke to the owners after I decided to come to Liverpool, I wanted to be challenging for Champions League by my third year at the club.”

“But I haven’t been surprised by the players because I’ve been able to watch how much they put into their game and how much quality they have. I think we’ve probably moved ahead of where I thought we would be this season. Obviously there has been some title talk, but some of our play has been exceptional, but there are some areas of the team that I feel we need to improve on.”

“It’s been a wonderful season, and to be in our position with 11 games to go is just fantastic, but there is still a lot of work to do.”

Rodgers has tried to play down his side’s title chances throughout the campaign, despite leading the pack at the halfway stage at Christmas. Liverpool have also produced some of the best attacking football in Europe this season, but have been victims of some costly defensive errors, which were both on show at Anfield on Sunday in Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Swansea. After losing top spot at New Year, Liverpool’s recent sparkling form has thrown them back into the contention for the league title, as they now sit just 4 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Liverpool fans will fancy their chances of making a top 4 finish now, and with massive games against Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur all coming at home, some fans sitting the The Kop will be beginning to dream of glory again.
