New Everton signing Romelu Lukaku has hit back at former-manager Jose Mourinho after he claimed that the striker wasn’t ready to play first-team football for Chelsea.

The Blues sold the Belgium international permanently for ÂŁ28million this Summer, after sending him out on loan for the previous two seasons, and Mourinho was quick to defend his decision to sell the youngster, who is highly-rated in England and Europe.

Mourinho stated that Lukaku wasn’t ready to play for such a big club and he wasn’t prepared to lead the line for the West London side, but Lukaku has been quick to respond to those allegations, and has bit back at his former-boss.

‘I want to develop and become one of the best and the manager wants to make our team one of the best teams in England.

‘So to me it was a great challenge to play under him. I need to play at a high level and play in a good team. I’m not saying Chelsea are not a good team but I needed to be in a place where it felt right.

‘I have the trust of the supporters. I can grow. I can develop. It almost feels that I belong here. That’s why I came back.’
