Nuri Sahin has revealed that the reason he left Liverpool midway through his season long loan spell was due to Brendan Rodgers’ insistence on playing the central midfielder in his unfavoured role behind the striker.

The Turkish international joined the Merseyside outfit on loan from Real Madrid for the 2012-13 campaign, but the loan spell was cut short in January after Sahin felt he needed to leave to do the best for his career, as he was being played out of position.

Sahin said “After scoring a few goals the manager started playing me behind the striker which does not suit my game.

“Despite my love for the club and the fans, I had to leave due to the managers insistence on playing me in that role.”

He scored three goals in 12 appearances whilst at the Reds, but he soon was shipped back out on loan to his former club Borussia Dortmund in January after his return to the Bernabeu.

He has now re-joined the club of his youth in Germany after failing to establish himself at Los Blancos.
