The 25 year-old, who is currently helping Chile top their World Cup group, has been told by Barcelona that he is free to leave if he wishes but the Catalan club are demanding ÂŁ20m from any potential buyers.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United have held preliminary talks with the Spanish giants over a move, with Arsenal also reportedly keping a close eye.

Juventus were ready to sign the winger following positive talks over a move to Serie A, but as of late, no deal or fee has been agreed.

And according to reports made in Chile, Juventus’ failure to secure a deal could prove costly in their bid to sign the Barcelona man.

It is understood that Sanchez is still open to talks for a potential move to England and would actually prefer a move to Serie A over the Premier League.

Meanwhile Louis van Gaal is hoping to make Sanchez his first signing since becoming the new Manchester United manager. And van Gaal, who is currently coaching the Netherlands in Brazil, will have the opportunity to take a closer look at the winger as his side face Chile in their final game of Group B.

The Dutchman left the job of securing top signings to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Woodward was the centre of much criticism last season after failing to attract any of David Moyes’ top tranfer targets, so this time round he will be determined to bring in a top player.

The move of Sanchez to Old Trafford would not only stamp their mark and show they are determined to fight for their Premier League crown next season but it would also show Woodward’s ability to bring in top talent.
