Sherwood questions whether Liverpool can handle the pressure

Tottenham face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday and with Liverpool still in the title picture, Tim Sherwood believes the mental pressure could affect the way Liverpool have been playing of late. Sherwood himself won the Premier League back in 1995 with Blackburn after losing to Liverpool on the last day of the season.

Around a month ago most were predicting this game would be crucial in deciding who gets fourth place in the league, but with Tottenham faltering and Liverpool flying, the game has a different significance. Liverpool are undefeated in the Premier League in 2014, but faced a nervy end to their last home fixture against Sunderland.

Sherwood has questioned whether Liverpool can cope with the pressure as the players at the club have not been in this position before.

He said: “They’re very, very close – one point off the lead and absolutely flying.

“They’ve got a strike partnership in Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge that’s the best the Premier League has seen for a very long time, and they’ve given themselves a real chance.

“Now they have to believe they’ve got something that might fall through their grasp and slip away and – believe me – that’s a real bad feeling to have because perhaps you don’t play with the freedom you’d played with earlier in the season. I know what it’s like myself.

“It all depends on how they can hold their nerve. City and Chelsea have to be favourites because of the players they have who’ve crossed that line and done it previously.

“But Liverpool have gone from seventh last year and must be believing they can actually win this Premier League title.”

With the strike partnership of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, known as the SAS, Liverpool have every chance of winning the Premier League, however their next three home games will define their title challenge. With Spurs followed by Man City and Chelsea, should Liverpool win all three of these games, they would surely be favourites to claim their first Premier League title.
