Cristiano Ronaldo was set for return, according to ex-boss

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has claimed that legendary former Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson told him he was ‘99.9 per cent certain’ that Cristiano Ronaldo would make a sensational return to the club from Real Madrid.

However, any chance of a deal fell through at that time when Ferguson retired from football after a trophy-laden spell in charge of the Red Devils in 2013, and CR7 stayed at the Bernabeu.

Evra, along with Ronaldo, were in the United squad together in the late Noughties, during which time the club won their third European Cup title with a win over Chelsea on penalties in Moscow in 2008.

The Frenchman, plying his trade these days with Juventus in Italy, joined United in 2005, and was seen as one of Fergie’s senior guys.

And he has revealed a conversation Ferguson shared with him shortly before his retirement of his future plans for the club – which included bringing Ronaldo back to England.

Evra Reveals All

“I remember we talked maybe two weeks before and he said, ‘Patrice, I will be here another five years,'” says Evra, in an interview with The Sunday Times.

“I said, ‘yes boss, let’s do it.’ I was so convinced. He was looking younger and younger, amazing. He even told me ’99 per cent, Cristiano Ronaldo will come’. I was like, ‘wow, we are ready to bounce back and to even win the Champions League again’.”

However, Ferguson stepped down and away from the game, and any potential move for Ronaldo ended, even though they remain linked with each other to this day.
