Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil took to his official Facebook page this morning to apologise to his fans after he missed a crucial spot-kick in last night’s Champions League match with Bayern Munich.

The German international started the game brightly and even won the penalty for the hosts, but unfortunately, he picked himself up and took the weakest penalty imaginable and saw his tame effort palmed away by Manuel Neuer, a goalkeeper whom Ozil grew up with in Germany.

The missed penalty cost Arsenal the game as they eventually lost 2-0 and face a nearly impossible challenge in order to qualify to the Quarter Finals.

The hosts were not helped by Wojciech Szczesny getting sent off in the first-half, but how the night could have been different if Ozil netted his penalty.

The German international was also involved in an on-field row with team-mate Mathieu Flamini which didn’t help their cause, and this morning, the German posted a picture of himself looking deflated and said alongside it:

“The next morning doesn’t feel better either. sorry guys – it wasn’t planned that way. Outnumbered it was really hard to win against this team.”

Ozil has been criticised heavily recently by Arsenal fans as they seem less than impressed with the German’s performances.
