Southampton completed their third signing of the summer transfer window by gaining the signature of Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Monchengladbach. The transfer fee was £18million.

Vestergaard had been linked to a move to the Premier League for quite a while with West Ham and Everton also being in the fray. However, the Dane decided to join Southampton and will have a medical on Monday.

The tall, lanky central defender will be moving out of Germany for the first time in his senior career. He began his career in the reserve team of 1899 Hoffenheim in 2010 before joining the first-string team a year later. He spent four seasons in Hoffenheim before being transferred to Werder Bremen. After spending a season at Bremen, Vestergaard went to Borussia Monchengladbach where he was a regular during his two seasons.

In the 2017-18 season, Vestergaard made 32 league appearances for Monchengladbach, scoring three goals. Two of his three goals came against his former clubs Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen.

Vestergaard featured in Denmark’s squad for the 2018 World Cup but did not play in a single game as Denmark bowed out in the round of 16.

Jannik  Vestergaard will be Southampton’s third signing this summer after Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounousi. Vestergaard’s addition should fortify the Southampton defense. The Saints conceded 56 goals in the Premier League last season as they narrowly avoided relegation.
