Southampton were like Santa Claus, says Pochettino

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino believes his side played like Santa Claus earlier on today against Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling game which ended 3-2 to Spurs.

The Saints took the lead at St Marys thanks to a goal from Adam Lallana, but that was cancelled out by Emmanuel Adebayor halfway through the first-half.

It was then a frantic second-half with goals flying in everywhere.

A Jos Hooiveld own-goal gave Spurs the lead for the first time in the match, but it only lasted two minutes as Rickie Lambert pulled the hosts level, but it was Adebayor who had the last say as he gave Tim Sherwood his first victory as caretaker boss.

After the game, Pochettino said his side played too much like Santa Claus in the second-half as they gifted goals away to their opposition.

“At 1-0 we had the game under control and we could’ve gone 2-0 ahead but we conceded and practically gifted them a goal.

“In the second half we dressed up as Santa Claus and gave them many presents. We made many mistakes and when you make these mistakes, you are punished. We are obviously very angry.

“At the beginning of the second half we were controlling the game but we conceded the second goal and it was hard to get back in the game, we were risking a lot.

“We just have to keep on working as a team. Before we had a run of seven games winning, and were looking up, now we are on the wrong side and the only thing we can do is keep working.”
