Former Anfield star made this revelation in his new book

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has revealed in his autobiography, ‘My Story’, that he tried to convince Toni Kroos to join the Reds.

The ex-England captain admitted that Brendan Rodgers allocated him and ‘unofficial role’ at Liverpool, where he would attempt to convince transfer targets to move to Merseyside.

Gerrard, now of LA Galaxy, texted Toni Kroos at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, despite knowing that Liverpool’s interest in the German midfielder was too ambitious.

Kroos also attracted interest from other Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. However, the 25-year old playmaker left Bayern Munich for Real Madrid that summer for approximately ÂŁ22 million.

‘God loves a trier’

“I had an unofficial role at the club, trying to persuade some great players to join Liverpool. Our target in 2014 was ridiculously optimistic. Brendan asked me to take a crack at trying to talk Toni Kroos into signing for Liverpool,” admitted Gerrard.

“He smiled when I said we’d be pissing into the wind with this one. I knew Real Madrid were gearing up to make Bayern Munich an offer, so I felt a bit awkward when I texted Kroos.

The German was on his way to winning the World Cup with his country and Real were the champions of Europe. But God loves a trier, and so I gave it a whirl.”
