Cole is out of contract in the summer and has had to settle for a bit-part role in Jose Mourinho’s side throughout the second half of the season, with right-back Cesar Azpilicueta impressing in his place.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Southampton youngster Luke Shaw, but the £30m price tag, plus strong competition from Manchester United, appears to have sent Mourinho looking elsewhere.
And it seems the Portuguese has set his sights on Atletico’s Filipe, who helped his team-mates knock Chelsea out of the Champions League last night.
The Brazilian, 28, is thought to be available for around £16.5m this summer, as the Blues plan a raid on the Vicente Calderon, targeting both Filipe and highly-rated striker Diego Costa.
