Manchester United’s Juan Mata has revealed all on his final conversation with former manager Jose Mourinho before his transfer from Chelsea. Mata was Chelsea’s player of the year two seasons running, but fell out of favour when Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge over the summer, and eventually forced the move out of the club. Most of the Spanish international’s appearences this season either came from the bench or saw him substituted before the end of the game, leaving him frustrated with lack of playing time during ‘World Cup year’.

Now Mata has revealed that Mourinho was sympathetic to his situation and supported his move to his new club.

“We spoke and he [Mourinho] said that this was a good option for me, and I told him I thought this was a good option for me. I wasn’t playing, and, if I’m honest, when I am playing football I am happy.”

“It’s the thing I like to do most. He wished me good luck and told be to be good, as did everyone at the club. I am very grateful for my time at Chelsea and pleased with my achievements there.

Since joining United, Mata has made four starts from a possible four under new manager David Moyes, as he hopes to secure a place in Spain’s World Cup squad in the summer.
