Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has admitted that it’s a relief to have finally scored this season after he netted a superb volley against Marseille last night in their 2-1 victory in the Champions League, and he is now hopeful that the goals will start to flow for him.

Walcott enjoyed his best season in an Arsenal shirt last year, where he scored 23 goals in all competitions, but so far this season, he hasn’t been able to find his scoring boots, but broke his drought last night after scoring a well-timed volley to give The Gunners the lead against their French opposition.

After missing a whole host of chances at the weekend against Sunderland, Walcott revealed after the game that he was relieved to finally have a goal for the season.

“The cross came in and the full back missed it,” Walcott told Arsenal Player. “It felt like the ball was in the air for a decade and I managed to keep my eye on it and [it was] pure technique into the top corner.

“It meant a lot getting off the mark [for the season]. Hopefully there are going to be more to come now. I started pretty late last year and I finished as top goalscorer so it’s a good sign. I’m pretty sure of that.”

The Englishman was also full of praise for the club’s away record.

“It just shows how consistent we are away from home,” he said. “We just need to be a bit more consistent at home now, that’s the next big step. If we show that, we can really go far this season. I really believe that.

“That record shows how much hard work everyone has [done] and it’s definitely something to be proud of, being part of that. It just shows how special this team is and how gifted these players are. I think we’re starting to believe that and you can see that in the performances.

“The likes of Aaron Ramsey has shone in every single game. It’s beautiful to play with him. It’s fantastic to see him playing very well. He’s had a lot of injury problems and I’m so happy for him.”
