Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he is good friends with Robin Van Persie off the field, despite numerous people suggesting that he dislikes the Dutchman because he is now taking centre-stage at Old Trafford.

After signing from Arsenal last summer, Van Persie has been a hit with the United fans and has carried on his superb goalscoring form, winning the golden boot once again last season.

The 30-year-old has already bagged four goals this season and many people were suggesting that the only reason Rooney wanted to leave United, was because of Van Persie.

However, the Englishman has denied those reports and revealed that they are good friends off the field.

“I have seen things said over the summer, but Robin and me are friends off the pitch,” he told the Daily Express.

“There is no problem between me and Robin at all. We are great friends and we want to help each other and be successful.

“The manager has made it clear that he wants one up and one behind and whatever way round that is, it doesn’t matter to me as long as one is always filling in behind and helping out the midfield.

“We have done the work together and the times we played together last season we did well so, hopefully, we can play more together this season and do well.”
