Toby Alderweireld criticizes Mauricio Pochettino’s ‘unjustified’ decision to drop him at Tottenham last season

Belgium center-back Toby Alderweireld blasts Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to drop him at Tottenham Hotspur last season. Alderweireld sustained a hamstring injury in November and was out of the team for a few months. After his comeback from injury, he started only three games out of a possible eight.

Alderweireld is currently one of the best defenders in Europe. His performances during the World Cup was stellar. Speaking after helping Belgium to their best finish at a FIFA World Cup, Alderweireld said, “I was very focused on this tournament. I wanted to prove something to myself, show that the period before the tournament in which I – for whatever reason – did not play, was unjustified. I wanted to show that I’m still Toby, same as in November.”

Alderweireld has been linked to Manchester United for quite some time now but Tottenham’s asking price of £70 million seems to be preventing the move from accelerating.

The Spurs are adamant on selling Alderweireld unless Manchester United meet the asking amount. However, they are also aware of the fact that the 29-year old’s value will drastically drop down next summer. In another 12 months, a release clause will be coming into Alderweireld’s contract. This will allow him to leave White Hart Lane for just £25 million.

Alderweireld has another two years left on his Spurs contract.
