Tottenham are title contenders, says Caulker

Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker believes his former side Tottenham Hotspur are genuine title contenders this season after they have had an impressive start to the new campaign.

Spurs have only lost one out of their opening five games and that was the table-toppers Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and after they beat Cardiff on Sunday, Caulker was impressed with their performance and the skill in their squad.

Despite waiting until the 93rd minute, Andre Villas-Boas’ men were in full control in Wales, but could not find their way past David Marshall in the Cardiff goal.

Paulinho’s first goal for his new club gave them the three points eventually and Caulker believes his old-side are real contenders.

He said: ‘It was devastating with the late goal from Tottenham. I thought their movement up front was great. But they have spent a lot of money and when teams spend that amount of money you expect big things from them.

‘I would say defenders will worry about the threat from different areas. They have got Roberto Soldado and Christien Eriksen running off and you have got to be focussed.

‘It’s slightly different. Without Bale they did not have that threat but they have other players who came in and looked strong.

‘With the players they have brought in and the squad they have got they should be achieving things. When you bring on a £27m plus player in the last minute it is going to be different. With the money they have spent they will cause teams problems.’
