Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the £21 million transfer of Villarreal centre back Mateo Musacchio, according to The Daily Mail.
The Argentine can play all across the back line, and is set to be the second defender signing in a matter of days, following Tottenham’s signing of English centre back Eric Dier from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon last week.
Musacchio is already very highly rated in his homeland of Argentina, as well as Spain, and helped Villarreal to a sixth placed finish in their first season back in La Liga following promotion.
Recently appointed Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is a well known fan, and tried to sign the 23 year old whilst at Southampton.
Marcelino, the Villarreal manager, cleared up the current situation in a recent press conference.
‘It’s a situation with three parties: the player, the buyer and the club in the middle.
‘As I have said many times, if the club sell an important player it’s because the right conditions to do so have been met.
‘It won’t be easy to replace him but the solution, for better or worse, will be found soon.’
