UEFA have picked the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to host the 2021 Europa League final, ahead of the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi.

Sevilla had already tried to host the event twice in the past, but the European governing body asked the Andalusian side to make some improvements to their ground to comply with their standards. The stadium previously hosted the 1986 European Cup final between Barcelona and Steaua Bucuresti, when the Romanian club delivered one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history with a penalty shootout victory.

The Sanchez Pizjuan stadium now holds 43,883 spectators and its host club have won the Europa League competition a record five times, with the news confirmed on Tuesday.

Sevilla’s recent great results in the competition and the background work by the UEFA vice-president and Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales assisted the club’s efforts to host the event.

The Andalusians have won the Europa League five times: in 2006 in Eindhoven against Middlesbrough; in 2007 in Glasgow against Espanyol; in 2014 in Turin against Benfica; in 2015 in Warsaw against Dnipro; and one year later in Basel against Liverpool.

Sevilla have already invested €12 million to renovate their stadium, while they are planning to put in another €30 million to move their offices to their training ground and make the necessary space required by UEFA for the hospitality and VIP areas.
