Manchester United scouts have been keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen’s Hakan Calhanoglu
The Red Devils are reportedly planning to move for the 21-year-old in the January transfer window, according to Italy-based website TransferMarketWeb.com.
Sunderland were linked with a move for the Leverkusen midfielder but United now appear to be favourites to acquire his services.
Calhanoglu scored eight goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season and is regarded as a free-kick specialist.
According to Turkish media outlet Koprubasi, United manager Louis Van Gaal was thinking about making an offer before the close of the transfer window, believed to be in the region of £26.4million.
The report also claims that United will have plenty of competition to sign the Turkey international, including the likes of AC Milan.
Muller was United’s no. 1 target
Calhanoglu was amongst a number of targets which Van Gaal wanted to bring to Old Trafford as well as Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller.
The 26-year-old, scored 13 goals in 33 games last season and has made a bright start this campaign, netting six goals in his last seven matches.
United were reportedly prepared to offer £71million in a bid to prize the 2014 World Cup winner away from the Allianz Arena club.
Muller, who has been with the Bundesliga side throughout his entire senior career, recently signed a contract extension keeping him at the club until 2019.
